Social Media and Communication Skills
Social media has changed the way we communicate, which caused an effect on our communication skills. The social media users has continued to increase over the years with a steady rise. Social media is a great form of non-verbal communication and self expression. Everyone has their own social site that is frequently used such as I am in favorite of Facebook. Over all social media sites because it allows to have have self-expression on my page even without posting a status. Such as likes, shares and even status, it can give you a insight on someone personality. However, social media is creating a social barrier for face to face communication. For example, "Approximately 93 percent of communication today is already nonverbal,
and thus requires an additional means of helping people understand each
other (such as smileys or emojis), since text does not convey the total
palette of intonations or facial expressions.(Rampages, 2017). Which is the biggest issue in miscommunication. For example, the misunderstanding of someone emotions or meaning behind a message or post because of a word or emoji. We all have this issue because of the thought process of someone not using "lol or related emoji" messages are interpreted in a different form. Over the years, society has used messaging a clutch to avoid the interpersonal communication. Experts have argued that, more often than not, families tend to text rather than have conversations. (Rampages, 2017)
